National action plan - Cereal field margins

Vision statement

Area targets for favourable management have been exceeded. Considerable progress has been made on the actions for management, advice and monitoring. The completed or current reviews of agri-environment schemes in each member Country has ensured that a greater range of management options is available to a wider range of farmers. There is considerably more research information available on ecological requirements of arable plants, invertebrates and birds than was available five years ago and steps are in place to improve our ability to monitor outcomes of margin management. There are still concerns that the plan has focussed on area of managed habitat (quantity) rather than on the biodiversity associated with these favourable managed habitats (quality). The future work of the group is likely to focus on better defining and measuring these qualitative aspects and identifying actions to ensure accurate targeting of management and closer liaison between species and habitat action plan groups.
